After the most challenging period in the history of our industry, we and our audiences have never been more enthusiastic, engaged and energized to celebrate the joy, power and thrill of theatrical film. Have we got a year for them. Universal’s 2022 slate includes new chapters from four of the biggest global film franchises in all of cinema, plus daring, terrifying, hilarious, gripping, groundbreaking new original films from some of the most electrifying filmmakers working today. We blast into summer with a literal heatwave on May 13, as Blumhouse presents a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic thriller, Firestarter , starring Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, about a girl with extraordinary pyrokinetic powers fighting to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her. Then, on June 10, experience the epic conclusion to a franchise that has thrilled fans around the world for three decades and has earned more than $5 billion worldwide, as two generations unite for the first time in Jurassic World Dominion . Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in this bold, timely and breathtaking new adventure from Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow. Produced by acclaimed franchise producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, and executive produced by franchise creator Steven Spielberg, Alexandra Derbyshire and Colin Trevorrow, Dominion is unlike any Jurassic film you’ve seen before. On June 24, acclaimed director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and reteams with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with the new horror thriller, The Black Phone . Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career, The Black Phone is directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson, based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill, and is produced by Jason Blum, Derrickson and his co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill. July begins with a joy explosion, as the biggest global animated franchise in history unveils the origin story of how Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell), the world’s greatest supervillain, first met his iconic Minions, forged cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the most unstoppable criminal force ever assembled in Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru . Packed with more spectacular action than any film in Illumination history, The Rise of Gru stars a spectacular new cast that includes Taraji P. Henson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren and Danny Trejo as the notorious Vicious 6. The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud and is directed by Kyle Balda. Since 2017, Oscar® winner Jordan Peele has disrupted and redefined modern horror with Universal’s Get Out and then Us . Now, on July 22, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare: the expansive horror epic, Nope . The film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya, who is joined by Keke Palmer and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. Nope is written and directed by Peele and produced by Peele and Ian Cooper for Monkeypaw Productions. Featuring an all-star comedic cast, the film, from DreamWorks Pictures, is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar. Summer terror goes on safari on August 19, as Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. From blockbuster producer Will Packer and James Lopez for Will Packer Productions, Beast is directed and produced by visceral filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur. Fall arrives with the out-of-this-world thriller, Distant , on September 16, starring Anthony Ramos as a low-level engineer aboard a space transport ship that has been struck by an asteroid. Crash landing on an unknown planet, he’ll need to find a fellow survivor (Naomi Scott), and avoid the aliens stalking him, before it’s too late. The DreamWorks Pictures’ film is directed by the filmmaking team of Josh Gordon and Will Speck. Then, on September 23, for the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the $3.5 billion Shrek franchise as daring outlaw Puss in Boots (Oscar® nominee Antonio Banderas) discovers that he has burned through eight of his nine lives— and getting those lives back will send him on his grandest quest yet. On October 14, the record-shattering Halloween franchise comes to a terrifying conclusion as icon Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode and makes her last stand against masked monster Michael Myers. Directed and co-written by David Gordon Green, Halloween Ends is produced by Jason Blum, Malek Akkad and Bill Block. Love then gets an unexpected second chance on October 21, as Oscar® winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite in a romantic comedy about exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made. From Working Title, Smokehouse Pictures and Red Om Films, Ticket to Paradise is directed by Ol Parker. On November 18, two-time Academy Award® nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped launch the #Metoo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever. Based on the New York Times bestseller, She Said is directed by Emmy winner Maria Schrader and is produced by Academy Award® winners Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B Entertainment. Steven Spielberg directs perhaps the most personal film of his career with The Fabelmans on November 23. Loosely based on his own childhood, the film is written by Spielberg and Tony and Pulitzer winner Tony Kushner, who both produce the film along with Macosko Krieger, and stars four-time Oscar®nominee Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and Gabriel LaBelle.
