We at Sony Pictures Classics remain committed to the theatrical experience, now more than ever. Our lineup for the remainder of the year is reflective of our resolve. But before we get to that, I want to look back on what we accomplished this year despite the older arthouse demo being on hiatus. In December we released Pedro Almodovar’s Parallel Mothers , starring Penelope Cruz who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Scoring another nomination for Best Musical Score this Spanish language feature topped $2M in box office, most of it coming during the surge of the Omicron variant. This past weekend we opened The Duke . This heist comedy stars Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent ( Bridget Jones Diary ) as a humble couple whose lives are changed forever when a Goya painting from the National Gallery goes missing. This one is really a lot of fun! Jazz Fest , a massive look at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, opens on May 13. Co-directed by Emmy nominee Ryan Suffern and five-time Academy Award nominee Frank Marshall, it features such major acts as Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffet, Winton Marsalis, Katy Perry, Earth, Wind & Fire and many, many more. On June 3 is Phantom of The Open , a deadpan comedy and true story about a dreamer and unrelenting optimist who managed to gain entry into the British Open Golf Championship. It stars Mark Rylance ( Bridge of Spies ) and Sally Hawkins ( The Shape of Water ). Hallelujah , the life of Leonard Cohen as seen through the life of his iconic song opens on July 1. It is as engaging and promises to be as successful a summer movie as Searching for Sugarman . On August 19 director Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me By Your Name ) returns with the stylishly entertaining Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams , a biography of Salvatore Ferragamo, opening on the toes of Fashion Week in the fall. In October we’ll release The Son , written and directed by Oscar winner Florian Zeller ( The Father ) and starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby ( Pieces of a Woman ) and Anthony Hopkins. This is destined to be in the awards picture. Also in the fall, fresh from its award-winning SXSW premiere will be The Return Of Tanya Tucker with Brandi Carlile, a great movie honoring a true Country and Western icon. Living will be our December holiday release. One of the hits at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this film is as emotionally satisfying as it gets, starring Bill Nighy ( Love Actually ) in a stunningly understated performance. Also on the horizon is Carmen , a modern seductive retelling of the classic Carmen opera starring Melissa Barrera ( In the Heights ) and Paul Mescal (“Normal People”), as well as A Winter’s Journey starring Jason Isaacs ( The Death of Stalin ) and John Malkovich. In all modesty I think this is a great lineup. Hope you agree. Be sure not to miss any of these films. That’s all for now. Plenty more coming next year.
