WASHINGTON D.C. (December 20, 2011) – Delfin Fernandez, Chief Executive Officer, Hoyts Entertainment, will receive the International Achievement Award in Exhibition, as part of CinemaCon’s International Day, it was announced today by Mitch Neuhauser, Managing Director of CinemaCon, which will be held April 23 – 26, 2012 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. CinemaCon, the official convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), is the largest and most important gathering of cinema owners and operators from around the world. Fernandez will receive his special honor during International Day festivities to take place on Monday, April 23, 2012.
Starting out at United Artists Theatres while attending college in Southern California, Fernandez worked his way up through the industry to become CEO of Hoyts Entertainment, a leading film exhibition and distributor in Australia and New Zealand. Hoyts Entertainment is headquartered in Sydney Australia and operates Hoyts Cinemas, the second largest exhibition group with 425 screens in 50 locations, Hoyts Distribution, a leading independent film distributor and Oovie, the leading DVD vending kiosk channel in Australia.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, where he finished his secondary education, Fernandez moved to the United States to pursue a career in the movie business. He graduated from California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Radio/Television and History. While there, he began his successful career in the theater industry with United Artists Theatres. He went on to supervise cinemas in Southern California, Nevada and Washington for several years as a regional manager.
In 1994, as Director of International Operations, Fernandez began his career in the international exhibition realm pursuing United Artists Theatres’ new international strategy in Latin America. He supervised the development and expansion of multiplex theatres in Mexico and Argentina. In 1997, he joined General Cinema International to further develop a Latin American strategy that included an expansion in Brazil and Uruguay. In 1998, he was appointed the Managing Director of a newly formed joint venture, Hoyts-General Cinema, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Following an ownership change in 2002, Fernandez was appointed CEO of Hoyts General Cinema South America, Inc. He then became CEO of Hoyts Entertainment in November 2005. He also currently serves as Director of NACO, the National Association of Cinema Operators, the largest exhibitor association in Australia and New Zealand.
