< PreviousCONGRATULATES CINEMACON ON A SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION IN 2022! THANKS FOR A GREAT PARTNERSHIP!I’m thrilled to be addressing the attendees of CinemaCon 2022 during the ICTA’s 50th anniversary! I know all of us are ready to get back to the movies and a sense of normalcy now that the pandemic is subsiding. What is the new normal on the tech side of cinema? First, know that I spent more than 20 years in exhibition on the technology level as a tech and technical manager. What I see with our emergence from the pandemic is excitement, gazing into the crystal ball of what can be done in the walls of a cinema. New ideas are being built on our experiences when cinemas were closed during the pandemic. These ideas are built on new tech that has been exposed to us during the pandemic such as Unified Communication and Collaboration (UCC), Streaming video on demand (SVoD) and eSports. I see exhibition has been forced to lay off a portion of the technical support backbone that ensured the show was on screen. This in a time when the film engineers that made the transition to digital were already retiring. I urge those involved in exhibition and the cinema technology landscape to engage and mentor those with a glimmer of interest in the inner workings of cinema. Ensure these candidates are educated with the many OEM and college courses required to design, install, service and operate cinema technology. Please also guide and encourage a career in cinema technology. Building our industry’s support infrastructure will help to bolster the state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge innovations being discussed this week at CinemaCon. We need technical people that have roots in cinema. We need the help, and all of you are the best resource. The ICTA recently concluded their annual Los Angeles Seminar Series where, for two days, we discussed technology trends and the latest in cinema tech. Among the discussions and presentations on LED emissive displays, IT/AV infrastructure and eSports we celebrated the ICTA’s 50th Anniversary where we recognized our past Presidents who have elevated the ICTA to it’s standing in the industry today. At the 50th Anniversary Gala celebration the ICTA recognized key individuals and organizations that kept the industry alive during the pandemic. The ICTA introduced the ICON Award of Excellence with the inaugural recipient being the Will Rogers Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers for their generous assistance to industry veterans that have fallen on hard times. The Inter-Society Ken Mason Award was presented to Jackie Brenneman, EVP and General Counsel of NATO, and Esther Baruh, past Director of Government Relations at NATO for their outstanding work on behalf of exhibitors that resulted in the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant which kept the doors of many theatres open across the nation. Concluding the ceremony for the evening the ICTA introduced the Annual North American Cinema Awards. The North American Cinema Awards went to Classic Cinemas Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, Illinois for the Best Cinema Refurbishment; Best New-Build Cinema to Movie Tavern’s Brookfield Square by Marcus Theatres in Brookfield, Wisconsin and the Best Comeback Exhibitor to Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas in Austin, Texas. ICTA’s European branch is currently busy preparing its involvement in the German cinema convention KINO 2022 taking place in Baden-Baden in May. There will be an ICTA branded panel discussion on the future of cinema technology which will be FRANK TEES VP, Moving iMage Technologies President, ICTA WELCOME TO CINEMACON 2022 (Continued on next page)( Frank Tees Continued) chaired by ICTA Directors Till Cussmann and Oliver Pasch. ICTA will also present a “Showmanship Award” to an outstanding German cinema exhibitor. Furthermore, we are preparing our Barcelona Seminar Series that will run from June 19th-21st. Participants will explore current industry trends and state of the art technology during our seminar on June 19th in the Cinesa Cinema Diagonal Mar as well as at our Focus Sessions on the CineEurope trade show floor. The ICTA EMEA Awards Party will take place June 19th at the Hilton Diagonal Mar. Finally, ICTA’s Annual Convention in 2022 takes place in Brussels, Belgium from July 24th-27th. The European team led by Jan Runge is busy preparing an exciting program for all participants, including trips to Cinionic, Bruges and programming with UNIC and other guests. The ICTA hosts many events throughout the year supporting exhibition with the latest in cinema technology at most major trade shows. Our members attend all the trade shows worldwide. I am particularly grateful to share some thoughts, in this, my first CinemaCon on the job as NAC President. This show is described as the largest and most important gathering of movie theater owners from around the world. As the purveyors for the food and beverage side of the presentation, we are excited to partner with NATO to play our role as Exhibition begins to find its footing in a comeback story for the ages! The excitement is building and we are starting to gather again as an industry. NAC was able to hold a successful Concession & Hospitality Expo in 2021 and we are looking forward to the 2022 version on July 26-29 at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista in Orlando . Visit our naconline.org for more information on how you can register, sponsor or participate in the trade show. Let me take a moment to promote NAC activities here at CinemaCon. NAC will have a full slate as we look forward to re-engaging in person with our members and industry contacts in a more traditional fashion. We are pleased to reignite The NAC Charity Golf Outing on Monday morning. Golfers will tee it up to support Variety, the Children’s Charity, The Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, The Variety Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles and NAC Educational Programs at the Snow Mountain Course of the Paiute Golf Resort. Perhaps the most important aspect of the NAC/CinemaCon partnership throughout the past decade is the many member vendors who are on display at the massive CinemaCon Trade Show Floor . While you are enjoying their offerings, meet and connect with our members who provide this impressive collection of products, equipment and services. Representatives from NAC will also be there at Booth 230J. Please stop by to say hello. As usual, NAC provides a complimentary meeting room for its members. If you would like to check you availability, visit out our website or stop by our booth. On Thursday morning we will continue our commitment to providing top flight educational experiences with the NAC Seminar: Buyer Behavior in the New World Order – The Cues that Support Buyer Confidence . What does buying behavior look like in this new world order? What will it take for concession food and beverage managers to not only purchase materials, but also supply the facilities they operate with goods and services? This seminar will attempt to offer cues into consumer behavior and offer more insights into the best practices for reigniting the concessions properties. While we are excited about the time here in Vegas, NAC is so much more than just a show presence. We are a daily source of Connections, Support, Information and Education through a variety of vehicles and platforms to meet the ongoing challenges of Concession Industry professionals. If we have learned anything else over the past two years, it’s that everything is better when we do things together. That philosophy has always been a part of our DNA, and a guiding principle at NAC. Please visit our website at naconline.org and follow us in the social media realm on Facebook, LinkedIn and twitter for all the latest developments in the Concession Industry.
