One thing is certain: there is no replacement for the movie-going experience. Our data proves that when theatres are open, people go to the movies . Comscore is a proud partner and supporter of the movie industry and applauds its resiliency over the last two years.I am happy to be back at CinemaCon 2022 less than a year after the successful and safe event that was CinemaCon 2021. Last year, within the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions, and financial difficulties, I was impressed to witness such a hopeful gathering of the exhibition community. However, I missed the chance to connect with many of my global colleagues who were unable to attend. I am pleased to see the encouraging reemergence of the global exhibition community at this year’s event. After a one year pause, the International Day program has returned to CinemaCon and, after more than two years of Zoom meetings, the Global Cinema Federation will once again be officially gathering in-person here at CinemaCon 2022. As Chair of the Global Cinema Federation, I was constantly impressed by the unending work of exhibitors large and small around the world, to ensure that we could exit the pandemic with confidence. It has been a difficult road for the GCF throughout these past two years, with Zoom calls in time zones across the world. Understandably, each member had to focus on dealing with local regulations in their own territories. Still, our strength during these past two years has been the ability to quickly communicate with each other about new science and research from across the globe that demonstrated the safety of movie theaters, and then communicating that safety, together as global representatives of exhibition, to regulators and legislators around the world. Today, I look forward to a bright future for exhibition; one that is inherently improved by the innovation that you, my peers and colleagues, have brought to this industry. There is so much we have learned about our audiences, our relationships with distributors, and the unique potentials of auditorium spaces outside of the traditional moviegoing experience. This wealth of new knowledge is bound to push us outside of our comfort zones and into fresh and exciting experiences for our guests. On that note, I am proud to support the newly founded Cinema Foundation, which I believe will have an important and lasting impact on the future of the exhibition industry, especially through their focuses on innovation and technology as well as industry data and research. After so much uncertainty and so much attention going to solving pressing issues, it is refreshing to be able to return to a forward-looking perspective instead of what felt like a never-ending defensive battle. While the Cinema Foundation has focused its initial fundraising efforts on the US market, I feel strongly that their work will be significant for the global exhibition industry, and I am sure there will be a day not far from now when the Global Cinema Federation and our members will be directly involved in the initiatives of The Cinema Foundation. It is an honor to lead a group like The Global Cinema Federation and I am thrilled about the future of our organization. As a reminder, GCF Advisory Board and Affiliate membership is currently free. It’s the time of year when I get to speak to some of the most courageous, ambitious, never-say-die business people I’ve ever met. I’m talking about all of you. Coming to CinemaCon this year feels even more special for many reasons. For one, the Motion Picture Association is marking a significant milestone: 100 years as the global voice and advocate for one of the most technologically innovative, culturally influential, and economically impactful industries in the world. For another, we are welcoming international exhibitors back to this in-person gathering. It’s hard to believe we would ever be celebrating anything so fundamental to our industry. But because of the pandemic, which took such a toll on the global economy and our business in particular, we have all come to appreciate many things we once took for granted. One of those things was the joy of shared space. There are few things that lift the human spirit more than sitting in a theater with friends, family, and even strangers to watch a great movie. For more than a century, this fundamental human desire for shared experiences has been a vibrant and renewable source of business for theater owners. As I look at our 2021 Theatrical and Home Entertainment Market Environment Report – or THEME Report – I couldn’t be more optimistic about the future of our collective industry. After a year that was largely shuttered and shut down, it was no surprise that our box office numbers greatly surpassed the totals of 2020. And given the challenges that continued to beset us last year, it was hardly surprising either that our numbers would be down from the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. However, there was a lot of good news. The U.S./Canada theatrical box office market was $4.5 billion in 2021, up 105 percent from 2020, but still down from 2019. When you add in the home/mobile entertainment market, the figure in 2021 was $36.8 billion. That was a 14 percent increase compared to 2020, and it just overtook the 2019 figure of $36.1 billion. While some industry watchers saw a downturn, I see – and I think you’ll agree – an amazing resurgence. Despite all the constraints and challenges, we came closer to the 2019 high water market than anyone could have predicted. We may not have broken any box office records, but we rebounded – and that rebound continues to move in one steady direction: up! Our industry’s domestic box office surpassed $1 billion last month. And the resounding successes of Spider-Man: No Way Home and, more recently, The Batman and The Lost City , have confirmed the continuing value of big theatrical openings – even during a pandemic. From the beginning, our industry, from creators to studios to theater owners, has recognized innovation and evolution as the twin heartbeats of our longevity. Through CHARLES H. RIVKIN Chairman & CEO Motion Picture Association THE YEAR OF THE REBOUND: OUR RETURN TO FORM (Continued on next page)some of the most tumultuous changes in history, we have continued to thrive. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I know few people who understand this better than theater owners. Thanks to our fundamental human need to enjoy movies in shared spaces, I believe exhibitors will continue to bring people together through the timeless magic of extraordinary stories over the next 100 years. And our industry at large will continue to be a robust economic driver of jobs around the world, directly and indirectly, in every community where we operate. I look forward to talking about these subjects and a few more when I speak to you all on Tuesday. ( Charlie Rivkin Continued)© 2017 Texas Instruments Incorporated.
